We are a community organization that unites dairy goat holders within NSW. We operate under the Federal Society that was established in 1934. There are six other branches for each of the states and territories (excluding Canberra). There is a total of 187 members, 12 being Junior members. There are a number of commercial dairies, soap manufactures and cheese makers across the State. Meetings are held every month at the Richmond Club, 33 East Market Street, Richmond. They are open to all members and we encourage ideas and suggestions. For details on the next meeting or if you wish to attend please contact one of the committee members. There are various branch shows held every year. These are open to all members of the public. They include the ANNUAL BRANCH SHOW held each year in January at the Hawkesbury Showground, Racecourse Road, Clarendon. |

The Formation of the Society In 1913 the New South Wales Department of Agriculture moved in the matter of improving the milk returns from goats, and a stud of the Saanen breed was imported from the Continent and established at the Nyngan Experiment Farm. Why this stud was ever disbanded, as it was in 1933, it is difficult to say, as it played a most valuable role, producing many fine producers which spread throughout the length and breadth of Australia. Up to this time no steps had been taken to establish the Goat Society of Australia, but it is interesting to note, and a credit to the sponsors, that a Society was established in the Riverina district of New South Wales where it operated for a short period under the secretaryship of the late Mr. E. F. Lane, Yaddra, via Burgooney. Unfortunately little is known of its proceedings but it had sufficient acumen to apply for the Goat Classes at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Goats made their first appearance at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in 1925, when two classes were provided for the Milch goats, one for each sex, with a similar provision for Angoras. The only exhibitors were Miss H. M. King and Mr. C Powell, both with Angoras. The same classes were provided in 1926 and 1927, but thereafter the section disappeared till 1938. From approximately 1930 the breeding of goats within the County of Cumberland, and particularly in and adjacent to the Brookvale area of Sydney, became somewhat popular with the result that classes for the Milch Goats were included in the Warringah Shire and Manly A. and H. Society’s Show. By 1934 the breeders resident in the Brookvale area became very restive in their desire to form a Stud Book Society which would coordinate and control Goat-breeding in Australia. The initiative was taken by Mr. And Mrs. F. W. Kinneir-Tarte and Mr. Graham F. Shirley by convening a meeting of those interested. This meeting was held in the Council Chamber, Shire Hall, Brookvale, Sydney, on the 12th May 1934. With Mr Kinneir-Tarte as Chairman, a Society under the name of the Milch Goat Society of Australasia was constituted. (Goat Herd Book of Australia Vols I and II, 1945, and 1947) |
